Energy
Policy
Coal. Tom supports the construction of the Desert
Rock Coal Fired Power Plant which the Navajo Nation recognizes as necessary
to replace the ageing facilities in the Four Corners region. It is
inevitable that these older facilities will need to be replaced with
newer technological equipment. Coal supplies over 78 percent of the
electric power to New Mexicans and this privately funded investment will
strengthen our economy and the Navajo people. Nuclear Power. Tom is a proponent of nuclear power and believes that New Mexico can lead the nation by capitalizing upon our knowledge of this resource from experts at Sandia and LANL. The energy density of nuclear power is superior to all other forms of energy, and therefore must become a larger share of our electricity supply. Nuclear power will supply the Hydrogen fuel needed for the Hydrogen economy.
Oil
and Gas.
The oil and gas industry is the most significant financial contributor to
New Mexico's economy. Tom is
a petroleum engineer and has been working in this industry for more than
eighteen years. Tom believes New Mexicans want their Congressman to have
an intimate understanding of the Federal legislative impacts on oil and
gas. In 2008, nearly 2.9 Billion dollars was contributed to the New Mexico
state government from this industry. As many have said, the health of New
Mexico's economy is directly correlated to the health of the oil and gas
sector. Tom has been actively involved in the Independent Petroleum Association of New
Mexico (IPANM) for five years and has recently resigned as its
President. Solar
Power. Tom supports both photovoltaic solar and thermal
solar installations. Tom recognizes that all sources of energy, save
nuclear, begin with the sun. Tom lobbied with other concerned citizens for
the City of Farmington Electric Utility to update its net metering policy
to ensure homeowners a reasonable return upon their green investments.
Tom's home incorporates passive solar design and he is an active student
of the latest solar technologies. Wind Technology. Tom supports wind generation at both the homeowner and commercial scale. Wind technology has been around for many years and will have a larger supply role in the future. Wind energy is not impact free and requires a significant amount of carbon energy usage to reach generating status. We must ensure that taxpayers are not burdened with the cost of transmission line installation. Often wind developers have not considered the economic cost and regulatory time burden associated with distribution line construction. Contact:
